| The Brooks Range is a place so immense and inaccessible as to be nearly mythical. The northern tree line reaches the southern edge of the range, leaving most of the mountains bare of vegetation. Wildlife is sparse. The landscape is softened only by snow, which can come at any time of the year. To venture into the range is to experience a sublime landscape, full of both beauty and terror. |
| Dennis Witmer’s splendid monograph, Far to the North: Photographs from the Brooks Range, explores the space, light, and geography of one valley of the Brooks Range . In his brief afterword, Witmer writes “That a place such as this should continue to exist seems unlikely, given the damage we have done. But it does exist, protected by distance, climate and luck.” |
